I don’t speak French but realised I could say grand things in this language using words common to French and English. This is how L’Agitation des Observateurs, Le Tremblement des Voyeurs came about. In this piece, the sound of the ensemble should be completely integrated and balanced, all instruments being equal in volume. Even though the trumpeter stands in front of the ensemble, his sound should be part of it and not be louder. This piece was commissioned by the Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music and premiered the Ives Ensemble with by Marco Blaauw in 2003. Gerald Barry
