Heiroglyphics is another example of Brant's newfound love of spatial techniques in composition. In a darkened venue, a lone timpanist opens the work as the soloist approaches the first music stand and turns on a light before beginning to play. On cue, the soloist will turn off that light and move to a second music stand, then turning on that light. This repeats for a third stand, as the soloist interacts with three widely spaced and unseen musicians. While the music is tightly scripted, the musicians seemingly do not play together, so much as simply in the same room.
