Jay Nordlinger, in his review in The New York Sun of the world premiere of Miss Lonelyhearts, provides far more information about Liebermann’s opera than we can here, but we will quote his first paragraph: “New York saw the premiere of a new opera on Wednesday night - Miss Lonelyhearts, by Lowell Liebermann. Mr. Liebermann and his librettist, J.D. McClatchy, have achieved a success - an opera that is worth seeing, hearing, and absorbing.” Of the music, Mr. Nordlinger writes, “The score is well paced and well crafted. It has energy and tension (though that tension is relieved). It is neither too long nor too short. And it is almost never dull.” This piece was commissioned by The Juilliard School in commemoration if its centennial, Miss Lonelyhearts is enjoying a series of three well-received premieres - East Coast, West Coast, and Midwest - across the United States. It is destined to become an important element of the rebirth of opera - particularly, American opera.
