"Our Krebs is known to have been one of the best pupils of Johann Sebastian Bach, consequently we made a play on words: In this great Bach (brook) only one single Krebs (crayfish) has been caught." In his organ compositions Krebs was essentially a follower of Bach, while in his clavier and chamber music the change of musical styles which occurred about 1750 is clearly evident. Characteristic of the pre-classical period is the juxtaposition and blending of old and new stylistic elements. Thus the music of Krebs represents the new courtly and sensitive spirit of that era. The Clavier-Übung I (chorale arrangements) is the first part of the four-part Clavier-Übung by Krebs and consists of arrangements of 13 chorales.
