With his second symphony, consisting of three movements, Max Baumann continues the tradition in that he composes tonally and juxtaposes a rhythmic-motoric musical main theme with a vocal side theme in both corner movements. Elements of modern jazz and swing music are also unmistakable. In the third movement, Baumann uses seven jazz instruments, including a drum set, four saxophones and two jazz trumpets.
