As a clarinetist frequently performing with string quartets, the clarinet quintet is a strange omission from Jörg Widmann’s catalogue of works. Up until now, his quintet programmes have included works primarily by Mozart, Brahms, Weber, and – in slightly altered or extended instrumentation – Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps, alongside Widmann’s own sextet Fieberfantasie. This gap in his oeuvre is now finally filled with his first Clarinet Quintet which is sure to become a regular part of chamber music repertoire in the future.
