Rautavaara moved to dodecaphony in the orchestral works Praevariata and Modificata. In chamber music the first work in this period is the Oboe Quartet (1957/1964). It includes material that Rautavaara intended for a string trio he was working on during his studies in New York, but eventually never completed. He also used this material in Modificata.
