They represent only a small portion of Viennese ballet music attributed to Gluck for which musical sources have been preserved. The volumes form a compendium that offers comprehensive editorial coverage of Gluck's activities as "Compositore von der Music zu denen Balletten" (composer of the music to the ballets). The present volume contains compositions from the years 1759 and 1760 (and, accordingly, the 1759/60 and 1760/61 seasons).

The ballets have been passed down only as sets of parts. They were commissioned by Count Joseph Adam Prince of Schwarzenberg and originated around the time of the premiere performances from the workshops of Viennese copyists. Today, they are housed in the State Regional Archive Ceský Krumlov (with the exception of the sinfonia for "Le Prix de la Danse", which has also been handed down as a composition by Ignaz Holzbauer.)

The ballet music works consist of a series of mostly short but occasionally lengthier movements that can be repeated or joined into larger musical units. "Les Corsaires" and "Le Prix de la Danse" were both premiered in December 1759 at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna with choreographies by Charles Bernardi, while Gasparo Angioloni most likely created the choreographies for "Le Berger magicien", "Les Miquelets espagnols", and "Le Naufrage" (premiered in 1759 at the Burgtheater), as well as those for "Les Faunes" and "Les Trois Couleurs" (premiered in 1760 at the same venue).The two Bernardi ballets are the only examples for which scenic descriptions have been recorded in the chronicle of theatrical performances by court dancer and ballet master Philipp Gumpenhuber. However, telling titles and works with similar contents help to reconstruct the thematic orientation of the respective ballets.

Les Corsaires (Vienna 1759) / Le Prix de la danse (Vienna 1759) / Le Berger magicien (Vienna 1759) / Les Miquelets espagnols (Vienna 1759) / Le Naufrage (Vienna 1759) / Les Faunes (Vienna 1760) / Les Trois Couleurs (Vienna 1760)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0499/1710/0196/products/BA05819_01_9790006567423_co_lrg_01.jpg?v=1615720941
9790006495603
Ballet Music (1760-1765)

In the second half of the 18th century in the Vienna court theatres, ballets formed an essential component of each production: it was then common practice to perform one or more ballets as interludes between the acts of a play or opera. There was correspondingly a considerable need for suitable music, something which was to the benefit of Christoph Willibald Gluck who made his living as, amongst other things, "Compositor von der Music zu denen Balletten" at the Viennese court between 1759 and 1765. In this function he was responsible for the music for the ballets, music which, in line with contemporary practice, was not necessarily completely newly-composed by him. In fact, the creative process was much more about producing the requisite ballet music in collaboration with the choreographers, according to the available personnel and institutional resources, whilst taking into consideration the expectations of the public and the wishes of the patron (the Viennese court). Behind this lay a quite different understanding of the concepts of "work" and "author" than in other musical genres or other periods, and the Gluck Complete Works (GGA) takes this into account by publishing his ballet music in Volumes II/3–II/5 of the Complete Works.

The three part-volumes follow the chronology of the works according to their date of composition or first performance. The part-volume II/5, published at the end of 2016, contains the last compositions arranged chronologically from the entire period 1759 to 1765, namely the six pieces of ballet music composed in Vienna between 1760 and 1765: Les Aventures champętres (premiere: 19.11.1760), Les Blanchisseuses (28.12.1760), Les Matelots (27.1.1761), La Halte des Calmouckes (23.3.1761), Le Tuteur dupé ou L'Amant statue (21.6.1761) and Achille in Sciro (planned for August 1765).

As the titles imply, these works belong to different genres. Les Blanchisseuses and Les Matelots are examples of the then-popular type of genre ballet – loose compilations of individual scenes, in which the everyday tasks of particular occupational groups (mainly of lower social standing) form the background, in atmosphere and visuals, for short love stories.

Les Aventures champętres is a pastoral ballet with cheerful genre scenes from the life of country farming folk, located in an Alsatian village. The note "Composč Sur des airs d'Opera comiques representés a Vienne" in the scenario indicates that this is a pasticcio ballet. In fact, it can be demonstrated that Gluck used popular song numbers for this ballet music from Opéras-comiques performed in Vienna, both from his own works (Le Diable ŕ quatre, La Fausse Esclave, L'Île de Merlin and Cythčre assiégée) as well as from operas by other composers (Raton et Rosette, Les Amours de Bastien et Bastienne and Ninette ŕ la cour). In this piece the close interconnections between Opéra-comique and ballet at the time are shown in exemplary fashion.

Likewise, the influences of Italian theatrical traditions can be discerned: for the comic ballet Le Tuteur dupé ou L'Amant statue the choreographer Gasparo Angiolini, with whom Gluck worked so successfully during this period, used a subject and figures from the Italian Commedia dell'arte.

By contrast, La Halte des Calmouckes is a variant of the form of "Turkish ballet" then very popular in Vienna: Angiolini places an ethnic-national group, the Kalmyks, at the centre of the ballet action, combining them in the public's perception with a fascination for the exotic, and staging this highly effectively by visual, choreographic, and musical means. The heart of the music, the extended Allegretto No. 9, was later used by Gluck as "Air pour les esclaves" in Iphigénie en Aulide (II/3).

Gluck's ballett Achille in Sciro was not performed during the composer's lifetime: this large-scale, heroic-pantomimic action ballet was composed for the festivities at the wedding of Archduke Leopold and the Spanish Infanta Maria Luisa in 1765 in Innsbruck, which was interrupted on 18 August 1765 by the sudden death of the Emperor Francis I. At the same time this marked the end of Gluck's activities as "Compositor" of ballet music for the Viennese court, which formed an important part of his output around 1760.

These works have now been made available for the first time for research and practical use in a historical-critical edition.

Les Aventures champêtres (Wien 1760) / Les Blanchisseuses (Wien 1760) / Les Matelots (Wien 1760 oder 1761) / La Halte des Calmouckes (Wien 1761) / Le Tuteur dupé ou L'Amant statue (Laxenburg bei Wien 1761) / Achille in Sciro (geplant für Innsbruck 1765)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0499/1710/0196/products/BA05814_01_9790006495603_co_lrg_01_4b53b13f-bf5c-4072-9e75-12cb66bb7d80.jpg?v=1615712350
G. He is credited with developing the genre of the sacred choral concerto (comparable to the Western a cappella motet or cantata) to its highest level. His thirty-five choral concertos for four voices were first published as a set in the early nineteenth century, however then they were published with only a Cyrillic text. What distinguishes the present edition is the addition, for the first time, of the Church Slavonic text in transliteration directly in the scores alongside the Cyrillic letters. In addition, the present Urtext edition is based on an exhaustive comparison of all early sources preserved in Austrian, British, and Russian archives. The editor of this edition has placed special emphasis on presenting an exact rendering of the dynamics and expressive markings as conceived by the composer himself, amending all inaccuracies of the edition edited by Tchaikovsky (1882). Similarly, the careful transliteration reflects the manner in which Church Slavonic was pronounced in Bortniansky's day. The Carus edition also features: - German and English translations (non singable) of the text at the end of each concerto. - A practical pronunciation guide for the singing texts to be found on the Internet. - Separate editions of individual concertos are also available for sale.

Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Series II (Concertos and Concerto pieces) – vol. 5

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy lived in the heyday of men's choruses. Early on, the composer had encountered the genre by way of his teacher Carl Friedrich Zelter and his Berlin“Liedertafel”, founded in 1809, had then gathered his own experience from the Leipzig“Liedertafel” societies, and was in contact with a number of male choral societies throughout his lifetime. Nevertheless, his relation to male choral singing was characterised not only by his inclination, but also by critical distance. The festive compositions for male chorus and orchestra forming the content of this volume are all commissioned works, two of which, the so-called“Gutenberg-Kantate” and the“Festgesang an die Künstler” on a text by Friedrich Schiller, also appeared in print during Mendelssohn's lifetime.

Concerta commode tractabilia (1731) und Concerti aus den Missae neo-editae (1729)

In the fall of 1909 Sibelius wrote in his diary:“At Koli!

Alain Resnais film consists of a mixture of black and white documentary footage from concentration camps and color shots taken in 1955 in Auschwitz and elsewhere. Eisler wrote the music, consisting of 13 self-contained numbers, within a few weeks in Paris. From the transmitted sources, however, it emerges that he had previously completed extensive sketches in Berlin, and culled especially his Winter Battle music (written in early 1955) from them. Later he also used material from Nuit et Brouillard for various incidental music pieces. The film, which drew considerable attention, won the Jean Vigo Award in 1956 and was nominated for the Cannes Film Festival. It was later the object of a double reception in East and West Germany at different times and in different versions. The musical text of the Complete Edition is based on the autograph partial score. During the recording of the soundtrack for the film, it emerged as is confirmed by the performing parts that modifications had been made in comparison to the music of the scores. For example, certain groups of measures were repeated so as to ensure that picture and music were synchronous. These discrepancies are listed in the Critical Report.

understood with a bit of imagination as a kind of program symphony. All the more surprising is the Revision History that occurred after the first performances and versions in 1896 and 1897: Sibelius soon revised two pieces, the Swan of Tuonela (which was soon to become very popular) and Lemminkäinen returns home (op. 22 no. 4). He had both scores printed, but stowed the two other pieces away in a drawer for nearly 40 years before he gave them their last polish. The entire cycle in its last authorized version was published in 1954, just as the composer wished. This happy ending is comprehensively documented in Volume I/12b of the Sibelius Complete Edition.

Sibelius No. Zero? Whoever is looking for orchestral works in several movements by Sibelius before the seven officially numbered symphonies will run into Kullervo op. 7, as well as Lemminkäinen op. 22. Sibelius follows a cyclical concept in these four tone poems, so that Lemminkäinen, owing to its time of origin, can truly be labeled as his Symphony No. Zero. The previously unprinted early versions, presented in the respective volume of the Complete Edition for the first time, can be dated to the year 1895/96. The first revision was made in 1897, after the world premiere. Only after this premiere did Sibelius write his First Symphony before he again revised the Lemminkäinen scores some of them much later and had them published.

Symphony No. 6

Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Series VI (Sacral Vocal Works) – vol. 11C

Elijah Op. 70 MWV A 25 Musical Sketches and Drafts, Discarded

Leipzig Edition of the Works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Series VI (Sacred Vocal Works) – vol. 11A

Elijah -
