27 secular mixed-voice choral settings (mainly for SATB choir) have been selected from the enormous repertoire of the Romantic period, with particular emphasis on musical and poetic quality. At the time of publication these were available neither in separate editions nor in collections. Composers from the generation of pupils and friends of Mendelssohn are represented (including Gade, and Hauptmann) with songs setting texts by Goethe, Geibel, and Eichendorff. There are also songs from the late Romantic period (with works by Reinecke, Rheinberger, and Herzogenberg), including a group of sophisticated folk song arrangements.
