Indeed, all four of Chopin’s ballads have the character of a dramatic story: the musical thread is spun with increasing tension throughout the work, reaching a powerful climax at the end. Following the Préludes, we have now thoroughly re-evaluated this edition and revised it to include the latest scholarly findings. Probably no one before him had composed technical practice pieces that at the same time reached such musical heights. Chopin’s Etudes are character pieces that are full of tension, written for the concert hall. The virtuosic works, including long-running hits such as the “Revolutionary Etude” op. 10 no. 12 belong to the pianist’s core repertoire. In addition to the two cycles op. 10 and op. 25, our Urtext edition also contains three Etudes without opus number, which Chopin composed for a Parisian piano method in 1840: wonderfully lyrical miniatures, which can hold their own with the 24 grand studies.

Etude a minor op. 10, 2 - Etude A flat major op. 10, 10 - Etude C major op. 10, 1 - Etude C major op. 10, 7 - Etude C minor op. 10, 12 [Revolution] - Etude c sharp minor op. 10, 4 - Etude E major op. 10, 3 - Etude E flat major op. 10, 11 - Etude e flat minor op. 10, 6 - Etude F major op. 10, 8 - Etude f minor op. 10, 9 - Etude G flat major op. 10, 5 - Etude a minor op. 25, 11 - Etude a minor op. 25, 4 - Etude A flat major op. 25, 1 - Etude c minor op. 25, 12 - Etude c sharp minor op. 25, 7 - Etude D flat major op. 25, 8 - Etude e minor op. 25, 5 - Etude F major op. 25, 3 - Etude f minor op. 25, 2 - Etude G flat major op. 25, 9 - Etude g sharp minor op. 25, 6 - Etude b minor op. 25, 10 - Etude A flat major KK IIb, 3, 2 - Etude D flat major KK IIb, 3, 3 - Etude f minor KK IIb, 3, 1

G. They testify not only to Chopin’s love for his native Poland, but also to the depth of the composer’s feeling for the mentality of his people. However, he also moved comfortably beyond such genre cycles, and pieces of this sort are brought together in this “Klavierstücke” book, in which we find lesser-known works (two Variation cycles, three Ecossaises) from Chopin’s earlier creative period along with rousing dance movements (Bolero and Tarantelle) and, to finish, the orchestrally conceived Allegro de concert. Up to now the four Rondos have been missing from our catalogue, but now they are finally available in Henle Urtext. Although they have been unfairly neglected, there are real discoveries to be made. It is hard to imagine that Chopin was only 15 when his Opus 1, the Rondo in c minor, was first published. Likewise, his Rondo op. 5, which incorporates the exotic sounds of Polish folk music, and the brilliant work in C major op. 73 were also written during his time in Warsaw. Without a doubt the young composer, who was the darling of the Warsaw salons, wrote these works as showpieces for himself. Here, and also with the Rondo op. 16, his mark is unmistakable. The first, op. 4 in c minor (HN 942), is not as well known as its siblings, but permits interesting glimpses inside the young composer’s workshop. The Sonata in b flat minor, op. 35, became known not least through the most famous funeral march in all of music history, while its mystifyingly brisk and secretive unison finale still astonishes today’s hearers. The late Sonata in B minor maintains the immense musical level of opus 35 and, in spite of all its drama, also offers many moments of repose, for example in the dreamy slow movement, where one is transported by the music’s cantabile character. Both sonatas belong at the summit of the virtuoso piano repertoire.

G. Beethoven was preoccupied with his unique work for many years, since at least 1815, and still shortly before his death, according to the highly complex source situation. The work will now finally be available as an edition produced from the new Beethoven Complete Edition in time for the 2020 anniversary year commemorating the composer’s 250th birthday. Not all doubtful cases can be clarified, not all gaps closed, but numerous aspects have been further illuminated in this edition. New findings and source evaluations taken into account here, appear, for instance, pertaining to the work’s title, the tradition of the metronome indications, the contrabassoon part, and the underlying vocal text in the finale, as well as in the original rendering of the sforzato and forte markings. The edition is to be considered, according to its editor Beate Angelika Kraus, as a“contribution to the understanding of a work in which there is a discrepancy between its significance in musical life and the critical appreciation of its musical text.”

Fréderic Chopin’s stay with George Sand on Mallorca in the winter 1838/1839 was ill-fated. With his own polonaises, Chopin also declared his allegiance to his native Poland. In a way, the genre had fascinated him since his childhood. The first three posthumously published Polonaises op. 71 as well as KK IVa nos. 1–3, 5 and 8 are juvenilia from the Warsaw years. The mature works begin with the seven great Polonaises op. 26 nos. 1 and 2, op. 40 nos. 1 and 2, op. 44 and 53, and, above all, the Polonaise-Fantaisie op. 61 of 1845/46, Chopin’s last great piano work. In addition the 2-part texture of the upper voices in the original was arranged for 4 parts with obbligato soli. It was only in this opulent, sonorous version, which Otto Nicolai and three composer colleagues offered to 19th century Viennese music lovers. The piece is of medium difficulty. In the Viennese version it is a rarity that offers an enrichment to the repertoire for choirs wishing to discover something new.
