As if it had been the composer's original intention, Gabriel Fauré's two works are presented together in this publication in an arrangement for flute and piano. The Pavane Op.50 was written in 1887 for orchestra and choir ad libitum, while the Sicilienne, Op.78, was for cello and piano dating from 1893. This piece however was soon integrated into Fauré's Pelleas et Melisande Suite Op.80. In both compositions, Fauré uses the flute as a main melodic instrument. The flute is used in its mysterious and evocative low register, and Stolba retains the original keys to maintain the original character of the music. In the melody, which contrasts with subtly nuanced harmony, the flute is featured in a cantabile melody of grace. Dynamic shadings help inspire an expressive interpretation.
