Following the ravishing success of their opera “27,” the team of librettist Royce Vavrek and composer Ricky Ian Gordon received a commission from the Houston Grand Opera to create a Christmas opera for December 2017. The charming and moving fruit of their new collaboration is an operatic setting of the Christmas story which began as a short book by Gail Rock, later expanded for television. Using a cast of 5 principals and chorus, the 80-minute work is framed as a flashback to the childhood of a girl whose family tragedy deprived her of growing up with joy and Christmas spirit until another life-changing event miraculously transformed her life.
