Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm is one of those artists who achieved national fame during their lifetime, but fell into obscurity with succeeding generations. In the case of Neukomm, this is particularly surprising, as he can be described as one of the most popular musical personalities of the first half of the 19th century. Extended concert tours, on which he appeared as conductor, composer, organist and pianist, took him to many European countries and to South America. The functional purpose of Neukomm's "Messe ohne Worte" can be seen in the musical "accompaniment" of the calm mass, where the organ takes the place of the sung parts. The interpretation and musical setting of the liturgical text is in the Classical tradition, which is discernible in the basic character of the individual sections and in their formal development.
