The rediscovery of the original manuscripts of Max Reger’s works for violin, viola and violoncello op. 131a-d in the Prague Conservatory Library represents a small sensation. These late works for solo strings, the last of which appeared only posthumously, were previously known only from their first prints. There is great interest particularly in the Cello Suites op. 131c, with which Reger “liberated himself” from a compositional crisis between December 1914 and January 1915 and which have been part of the standard repertoire for a long time. By consulting the autographs, various ambiguities could now be clarified for the first time.
