In 1959 Peter Schickele composed a flute octet for Albert Tipton’s students at Aspen; long before the medium of flute ensemble became a growing genre, Schickele prophetically explored the colors of 8 flutes together, and in places developed textures anticipating later developments toward minimalism; Philip Glass was one of the flutists in the ensemble premiering MONOCHROME I. After several more works in this series for other instruments, in 1982 Schickele composed MONOCHROME V for the same instrumentation, a much longer work with more developed exploration of minimalist counterpoint and its relationship to J.S. Bach. Both works are fascinating to hear and play!
