This motet for two four-part choirs (SSAT and ATBB) by Samuel Scheidt (1587–1654), a pupil of Sweelinck, achieves a particularly majestic effect through the alternation between high and low choirs. The homophonic verses of the well-known Christmas carol "In dulci jubilo" are repeatedly interrupted by richly imitative sections. Scheidt's motet is an excellent choice for choirs seeking to include something distinctive and festive in their Christmas concert repertoire alongside more traditional pieces.
