Commissioned by the Albany (NY) Symphony Orchestra, La Seine explores the full range and dynamic character of the instrument. From rapid fingerings to long, sustained elements, La Seine is an impressive solo outing. Originally composed for English Horn solo, it is here transcribed for the alto saxophone. For advanced performers.

LA SEINE for solo Alto Saxophone
Inspired by Joan Mitchell’s expressionist painting La Seine, James Matheson’s work parallels the painting in its wildly energetic exploration of texture. Matheson covers much ground within 4 minutes yet keeps altissimo to a minimum, and is at times a study in tremolos between contrasting fingerings for one pitch, creating timbral intensity. LA SEINE was commissioned by the Albany Symphony, originally as a solo for English Horn (available separately as 114-41416). The present saxophone version was created by Matheson for Tim McAllister who premiered it in 2007 at the University of Arizona Museum of Art.
