Commissioned by Paul Zukofsky in 1970, this is the second in a series of works for solo strings. The eight sections are all based in some way on the opening thematic material – the variations exploiting the harmonic and melodic gestures implicit in the “theme,” while the cadenzas are, to some extent, an expansion of the variation principle.
