Wernick’s first piano sonata has been described by the composer as a “musical witch’s brew of anger, savagery, lyricism, and unabashed sentiment.” Commissioned by pianist Lambert Orkis, the sonata is the composer’s longest work (42 minutes) and was premiered by Orkis at the Hirshhorn Museum in 1983; the sonata is recorded by Orkis on Bridge Records. Its three movements are titled: “... in the forehead of the morning sky,” Fragments of Things Remembered, and Reflections of a Dark Light.
