The Mass in A major published here is one of the compositions which Franck wrote for liturgical use at Ste. Clotilde. It received ist first performance there, under the composer's direction, on the 2nd April 1861. Regarding the vocal scoring of the Mass it is noticeable that only a few bars in the Ordinarium movements are expressly given to the solo vooices. Several other passages can, however, by sung by the soloists rather than the choir, and in this edition these are indicated.
