Among the chamber music works of Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, the Nonet in E flat major op. 139 occupies a special place. Like Louis Spohr’s Nonet op. 31 it is scored for five wind instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn) and four strings (violin, viola, violoncello and double bass). Rheinberger's rich melodic invention and the obvious pleasure he took in experimenting with the various tonal registers offered by the instruments of the ensemble lend the work a very special color.
