This small, expressive setting of the “Ave Maria” by Verdi for solo soprano and strings is not based on the Latin text, but on an Italian version of the Marian prayer. Verdi took it from a long poem known as the “Credo di Dante, ” which contains texts of faith and prayers, whose author, according to recent research, is probably not Dante. The “Ave Maria” was initially only available as a piano score and in the past was often only performed in this reduced form. The present edition, on the other hand, also provides the original version with string accompaniment. Only with this does the special, intimate atmosphere of Marian piety that surrounds Verdi's setting really come into its own.
