With Robert Schumann’s Studies for Pedal Piano op. 56 an interesting, balanced and expressly melodious work has been handed down. However, it is a work for a type of piano which has never been able to establish itself in the musical mainstream. In Claude Debussy’s arrangement for two pianos he has created a stroke of genius in which the work is presented in a version using simple doubling or reduction of the parts and the use of two instruments which allows the canonic form to be rendered in stereophonic sound. As a result, the composition is enriched artistically and its concert performance is made accessible. Moreover, it offers the unique pedagogical possibility to explore phrasing and expressing through imitation – for example between teacher and pupil. Debussy’s version is presented here for the first time in a corrected, new edition with fingerings and an informative explanatory texts.
