The rediscovery of the original manuscripts of Max Reger’s works for violin, viola and violoncello op. 131a-d in the Prague Conservatory Library represents a small sensation. The three Suites op. 131d for viola dated November/December 1915, which were only published posthumously, were previously known only from their first prints. Especially in this case, in which only a copy of the first suite, corrected by Reger, was available for the first print, the unobstructed view of Reger’s compositional intention is illuminating from several points of view.
