Commissioned for percussionist Gordon Stout to commemorate Donald Hunsburger’s retirement after 40 years of conducting the Eastman Wind Ensemble, each of the concerto’s five movements highlights different timbral groupings of types of percussion instruments, Composed in late 2001, the composer notes there is an inherent darkness and sombre feeling, although not intended as a 9/11-inspired work.
