The Fall Season
The weeks that end the Church year are part of what is known as Ordinary Time, the name deriving
from the fact that the Sundays are numbered (ordered) in the lectionary. The season has also
historically been known as Kingdomtide in some Protestant churches, a time to recognize the
establishment of the church as the kingdom of God on earth. The season begins when Pentecost ends
and continues until Christ the King Sunday closes it for the year.
While this extended period contains numerous Sundays without specific festivals, it includes four
important celebrations: Reformation, Thanksgiving, All Saints and Christ the King.
Reformation is celebrated in both Protestant and Roman churches as a time of renewal and
redirection, focusing on the eternal faithfulness of God throughout the ages. Opinions differ as
to the exact date it is observed, though it falls either early or late in October.
Thanksgiving also is found on differing dates in various localities and rejoices in the generous
resources we are given in our daily lives.
All Saints invites us to commune across the millennia with the hosts gone before, both officially
canonized saints as well as those whose lives have intimately affected our own.
And finally, the Feast of Christ the King focuses on Christ as the Lord of the universe.
As in other volumes of this series, the registrations suggested are mere guides to the organist,
with actual decisions relating to balance, contrast and overall effect left to the discerning ear
of the musician.
