Anthony Giamanco Anthony was born in Detroit, Michigan, and has been a professional musician since age 17. He attended Eastern Michigan University, where his musical studies included voice, piano, organ, and composition. Dady Mehta, Mary Ida Yost, Michelle Johns, and Ernest Brandon were among his professors. Mr. Giamanco is the Director of Creative Arts and Worship at Shalom Lutheran Church in Pinckney. He also oversees the adult and children’s choirs, a brass quartet, a handbell choir, a contemporary ensemble, and the tech and drama departments. Under the auspices of the University of Detroit-Mercy music and drama departments, Tony composed a score for an English adaptation of an ancient Greek tragedy, “The Libation Bearers,” initially performed in the ruins of open-air amphitheaters throughout Greece. For five seasons, he served as music director of the Dearborn Youth Theatre, and for three seasons, he was assistant director of the Livingston County Chorale under Dr. Marilyn Jones. He has received composition awards for his original works and arrangements, which include the vocal solo “Christmas Again” (published by Darcey Press), a TTBB a cappella setting of “Swing Low, Sweet
Chariot” (published by Jackman Music), and an original setting of “The Lord’s Prayer” for voice and piano, published by Whole Tone Press. In 2023, his choral work, “When Music Sounds,” won the Huntsville Master Chorale Choral Competition, receiving its premiere on June 3, 2023. His compositions appear in the catalogs of numerous publishers (GIA, Augsburg Fortress, Lorenz, Alfred, The Leupold Foundation, and Paraclete Press, to name a few) and include works for choir, piano, organ, handbells, solo voice, and chamber ensembles. To date, he has published over 350 works.
His organ and piano pieces have appeared in numerous issues of “The Organist’s Companion” (The Leupold Foundation), “The Organist,” “The Organ Portfolio,” “The Sacred Organ Journal,” and “The Church Pianist” (Lorenz Publications). Performances of his compositions occurred throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. In addition, Carson Cooman, Erik Simmons, and James Flores have recorded Tony’s works for organ. A musical collaboration with hymn writer Adam M. L. Tice resulted in their hymn, “God Bestows on Every Sense,” being included in the new liturgy and song supplement to Evangelical Lutheran Worship, All Creation Sings (2020), published by Augsburg Fortress. JW Pepper has bestowed the prestigious “Editor’s Choice” label on his choral compositions “We Must Believe” (Shawnee Press), “God Bestows on Every Sense” (Augsburg Fortress), “Winter’ (Alfred Publishing), and “Be Joyful, Mary, Heavenly Queen” (Oregon Catholic Press). In 2007, his choral work, “Love Comes Trick-a-lin’ Down,” was a top seller for the publisher, GIA. Tony is a writer member of ASCAP and a member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO).
