The well-known violin sonata HWV 364 has survived in Handel’s manuscript with an incipit in alto clef and the annotation “per la viola da gamba”. For this reason, we have also published it as a viola da gamba sonata, see G149. Since the sonata is clearly intended for a string instrument (the editions for oboe are based on an error on the part of the publisher Walsh) and also sounds very good in the lower octave with viola da gamba, it makes sense to play it on the violoncello as well. With a version in tenor clef, we herewith follow the wish of cellists to make this wonderful music accessible to them as well. Edition Güntersberg
