This is a sensual pantomime and dance from the region of Guanacaste in Costa Rica in which a couple imitates a Spanish bullfi ght. In this scene, while dancing and playing the role of the bull, the man tries to kiss the woman, who herself is playing the role of the bullfi ghter. Usually there are six couples dressed in bright colors and decorated hats. This dance, also known as ‘Parrandera, ’ dates to the colonial days and similar dances are also found in Nicaragua and Salvador. The 2/4 meter with a continuos triplet rhythm in the bass line is characteristic of this dance. The accompanying instrumental ensemble includes a rich percussion section, as well as guitars and trumpets.
