The term Au Milieu - in the centre - is used in ballet to describe exercises performed away from the bar.Abandon, balance, virtuosity, vulnerability and danger are its elements. It is a tribute to those who have conquered and died at the keyboard.© Gerald Barry
Au Milieu is a paraphrase of “_______”, an ensemble piece from 1979. “_______” was written after seeing an exhibition of Rothko paintings which made me want to do something as focussed and intense. The term Au Milieu is used in ballet to describe exercises performed away from the barre. The music’s element therefore is danger, especially for the performer. © Gerald Barry
