There are very few pieces in the Nikolai Kapustin oeuvre like this Sonatina intentionally written as aneasy piece. Kapustin was approached by a music school for children and asked to write something “not too difficult”, and although he at first declined he changed his mind and turned towards writing something “easy”, his Sonatina for piano, Op. 100 was composed in 2000. The piece is written in the style of a simple classical sonatina, which makes it easily approachable, and sounds as if it were something from Haydn’s or Mozart’s chamber music performed with a jazz combo.ABRSM Piano 2019 & 2020 Grade 8 Syllabus
