Considering Bach’s activity as transcriber and transcriber of his own works and the necessary recalibration, as well as conscious manipulation, to which he subjected the musical text based on the specific destination – such as rewriting passages and making key changes not only for reasons of idiomatic adherence, but also for expressive needs –, the editors have acted according to the principles of translation studies, considering the two instruments as true languages. Far from the blind and chimerical need to make a literal transposition of the original text, they have pursued the desire to question thoroughly each single problematic passage in order to be able to understand it fully, put it into context again and, where necessary, reformulate it in compliance with Bach’s style. Only by constantly taking into account the characteristics of the guitar do these cease to represent limits and instead open up horizons of possibility.
