This volume represents the first edition of a precious anonymous collection of forty-eight versets and twenty-five canzonas composed in the eight tones for organ. They very probably constitute the oldest partimenti known today after the versets contained in L'Organo Suonarino of Adriano Banchieri. Up until now, these works have escaped the notice of scholars dedicated to this fundamental genre of keyboard practice.
The manuscript is the fourth section of one of the miscellanea codices belonging to Padre Giovanni Battista Martini (1706-1784), currently preserved in the Museo internazionale e biblioteca della musica di Bologna, identifiable with the call no. P. 129 (olim Cod. 96).
